October was a busy month

Xenoholics #1, and Sketch Monsters VOL. 1 both hit the stands, and I went to New York Comic-Con!
New York Comic Con was a blast. Really happy that I was able to meet so many great people. Comic fans, new and old. With my new comic releases, I'm excited and happy that people seem to dig the books.

Two really cool things happened recently:

MTV GEEK put Xenoholics #1 in their Top 10 for October 2011.
It was an honor to be included with the great books. The rest of the list was simply amazing.

THEN IGN did an article called "8 Comic Scribes to be on your Radar."
Which also included me. Pretty rad.I know a lot of guys on that list and it's cool to see my name among them.

October looked busy from the outside, but the behind the scenes was insane. My work load for November is intense, but that means it's also building an amazing 2012.

Look out for Xenoholics #2 on November 16th and Uncharted #1 two weeks later on November 29th!

One of the books I'm proud of the most is DEAR DRACULA.
Vinny Navarrete and I worked our butts off to create an all ages book that could be enjoyed by kids and adults alike. To this day I still think it's a great work deserving of more recognition. Maybe soon that will happen.

A lot of people new to my work don't know about this amazing book and I want to tell you about it.

The premise is simple... it's about a little boy who writes to Dracula at Halloween instead of writing to Santa Claus at Christmas. He tells Dracula that for Halloween this year he wants to be a real vampire. Dracula shows up and takes Sam on an adventure of the night. It might sound a bit more grown-up, but kids of all ages will love it.
It's 40 pages of full color gorgeous artwork, that is very kid friendly, in a amazing hardcover package.

It's a quick tale that takes place in the past with Banner hiding out in Russia. Good times.

I actually wrote this one a few years back, but it just never found a home until now.

Story time! From that time I was arrested at Universal Studios.

Back about ten years ago when I worked in LA my buddy Dan and I had season passes to Universal Studios, so we would go almost twice a week. We’d get off work early, go to the park, get a few beers and ride a few rides.

One day after riding the Tour Tram, we got off and talked with the Tour guide for a bit. He was a cool guy and the conversation went on for about an hour.

After the conversation was over we went to the new “Mummy Maze.” As soon as we walked out of the Maze we were ambushed by a bunch of security guards yelling at us.

They handcuffed us with those white ties and made us sit on the ground in front of the Maze while they yelled at us. Saying that we jumped off the Tram Tour and were running around backstage getting into trouble.We tried to tell them that was impossible, to ask the Tram Tour guide, that he would vouch for us, but they wouldn't listen.

Now before I continue… a quick note. People who know me, you know what I look like.

But Dan is a “Jack Black”-like guy with a big black leather jacket with patches, chains, and an anarchy symbol on the back. Also Dan had a mo-hawk… not a faux-Hawk, but a for real big Mohawk. That was spiky and green.

So after about an hour of yelling at us in front of people in line and the crowd walking by the security guards took us to a little interrogation room at Universal Studios.

This wasn’t mine and Dan’s first time in a interrogation room that year but whenever I get into trouble I start to laugh, so here I was laughing my ass off, which wasn’t making the situation any better. I must have looked like a psycho laughing as I was taken handcuffed through the park.

So Dan and I are sitting in this little interrogation room, still hand cuffed, waiting to find out what the hell is going on and this older woman walks in and starts to tell us:

OLDER LADY: "Two Latino men matching your description were seen jumping off the Tram Tour and running around backstage."

I repeat... “Two Latino men matching your description…”

I looked this lady dead in the eyes and said…

“Ma’am, do I look Latino to you? Clearly I’m a black man.”

Awkward Silence, and then it’s like she looked at us for the first time and said “You’re free to go.”

JOSH: “NO way. You’re not getting off that easy. You embarrassed us in front of lines of people. Traumatized us. TRAUMATIZED, Lady. We don’t just walk away.”

OLDER LADY “What do you want?”

JOSH: “I want free parking… and I never want to have to wait in line for a ride ever again.”

The older lady left the room and came back a few minutes later with a little laminated pass.

She said “One year” and let us go. The little pass said we were VIPs and didn’t have to wait in line, but it expired in a year.

Dan and I left the park with smiles on our faces. We came back the next day and rode the Jurassic Par ride FIVE times in a row just because we could.

This went on for about a year. True story. :)

Spider-man attacked my house!

Meant to take pictures of this weeks ago before Halloween, but just got around to it today.

This year for Halloween my wife and I put fake web up in front of our house. It's a bit ruined now because of the rain but still looks kind of cool. Every time I looked at it I was reminded of Spider-man.
I should have gone as the Green Gobin for Halloween this year and had a hanging Spider-man doll hanging from the porch like I just killed him.
That would have scared the kiddies!

Comic Pitches that were never pitched: Batgirl and Robin.

Little feature about comics I looked into pitching but decided not to for whatever reason.

Back before Dear Dracula came out, DC Comics had started their new kids line featuring Super Powers, Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam, Supergirl: Cosmic Adventures in the 8th grade, and a few others I forget. Vinny (Vicente Navarrete) and I liked the idea of doing a kid's book version of some of the DC Comics characters, so...

The ideas was to pitch something similar, but in the same style and format as Dear Dracula.
One of the important aspect that I find fascinating about the DC Universe is the relationships between it's characters. And you can't talk about relationships in the DCU without bringing up Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon. I've always wanted to write Batgirl and Robin, the current incarnations are amazing, I love them and I'm dying to write them, but nothing beats Dick and Barb.

The general idea was to do "The young adventures of Batgirl and Robin", hopefully with a better and less obvious title than that, with the youthful detective themes of the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew mixed with the fun of Scooby Doo and the wit of Veronica Mars. They'd be super heroes by night but by day they'd investigate mysteries at Gotham City High School in their real identities of Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon. For the most part we'd never see them in their costumes, but street clothes.

This just didn't work out for a variety of reasons, but the end story is we NEVER pitched it. Still some art was produced for it and I felt it would be great to share it with everyone.
Bonus points to anyone who can tell me who all the characters in the line up above are supposed to be.

Now if only Vinny and I could get a Ace the Bat Hound story for the next Wednesday Comics...

No Mirror, Mirror at LBCC this weekend...

I'm very sorry to report that due to a shipping error at the printers...
I won't have copies of Mirror, Mirror this weekend.

Obviously I'm very disappointed in this but most of all I'm sorry that everyone who thought they might get a copy this weekend, now can't. I was really looking forward to showing off and sharing the finished product with everyone. We all worked very hard on this book and were really excited to finally get it into your hands.

It will still be available in stores in November, so you'll be able to get one then.
Please get a copy from your local retailer. If they don't get one, tell them to order you one.

Again I'm sorry for this issue. Trust me... it f'n sucks.

1989!!!

1989 was a crazy year for genre films.

Pretty much every popular film franchise ever made had a film released that year. Take a look at that list below, it's intense. One long list of awesome.
What was going on that year? It's nutty to think that the last year of the 80's was also one of the best years for genre movies. It says a lot about those ten year.... well, what it really says is that most of 1989 for me was spent inside a movie theater. I must have been going to the movies every weekend, because I know I saw the majority of these movies on the big screen.
Think about this:
Indiana Jones and the last Crusade was released, then three weeks later was Star Trek 5, then a week later it was Ghostbusters 2, then... the big one... one week later... BATMAN. And that's just the tip of the ice berg.
That year we had, Batman, Marty McFly, James Bond, Captain Kirk, Freddy, Jason, Fletch, Peter Venkman, Michael Myers, Indiana Jones, the Griswolds, Frank Castle, Bernie, Harry and Sally, Riggs and Murtaugh, AND Bill and Ted! The list goes on and on!

OVERLOOK IS ONLINE!!

One of the comics I'm most proud of is a mini series I did with Image called Overlook.
It was my love letter to gritty crime noir with great black and white art by Ale Aragon.
"In the town of OVERLOOK, a dirty prize-fighter by the name of Mickey "The Nickel" Nicholson will do anything for a buck. Mickey is hired by one of OVERLOOK's most notorious mobsters to infiltrate an underground boxing outfit and find a massive stash of stolen "rainy day" money and kill the wayward wife responsible. In return, a target of Mickey's choice will be assassinated by the mobster, no strings attached. It's the deal of the century, but like any deal in OVERLOOK, there's much more than you could ever bargain for."

Got great reviews but no real mass appeal.
My favorite review came from Josh Flanagan and iFanBoy when they listed it as an "Under the Radar Image Book."

How the Goonies movie made me think I was once stuck in an alternate reality!!!

Like most people my age The Goonies played a huge part of my childhood. As a Kid I watched it repeatedly until I knew the film like the back of my hand. I could even quote it word for word. The Goonies were like old buds of mine and I myself wished I was a one of the Goonies.

During the summer between my 5^th and 6^th grade years I visited and lived with my uncle in Montana. It was a summer that made many memories like beating Zelda: Link to the Past and watching Helter Skelter for the first time.

On my way back to California from Montana I had a layover at the Denver airport. This was my first time traveling alone, but for the most part I knew what I was doing. I had already travelled enough at this point in my life that going alone was no issue.

Although I thought I was independent, my parents didn’t. They arranged for a friend of the family to meet me at the Denver airport. The family friend didn’t show up, the family friend who was supposed to make sure I was okay and that I got to the airport safe was a no show. I tried to call my parents; I tried to call my uncle… anyone… but no one answered. I then tried calling the family friend and got the not assuring “doo doo doo, this number is no longer in service…”

At this point I knew was going it alone so I went to the counter and asked for help but they had no idea who I was. My flight had been canceled and the next flight wasn’t for 4 hours. I had to wait in the “young kids traveling alone” room… by myself.

They sat me in front of a television and handed me a VHS tape that looked just like the one from “The Ring.” It was plain black, no cover and a white sticker with a hand written “Goonies” on it. My first thought was “Perfect. No problem. I’d just sit and watch the Goonies.”

As I’m having a good time watching the Goonies we get toward the end… the part where the Goonies go down the big water slide and land in the water outside the pirate ship… (I really wish there was a Goonies amusement park.)

We all remember the Goonies land in the water and swim to the pirate ship without any trouble, right? RIGHT?!

So I’m sitting in this airport, by myself, at night, kind of lost and then one of the weirdest things in my young life happened…

A Giant Octopus attacked the Goonies.

WHAT THE HELL WAS THIS?

As I have said, I knew the Goonies movie like the back of my hand. I watched more times than I could count. There was no giant Octopus, but now there was?!

So I sat there in this tiny room at the airport, kind of freaking out, when I came to the only logical conclusion possible…

I was in an alternate reality.

Like something out of a Stephan King novel something must have happened on the airplane sending me to a reality in which the Goonies had been attacked by a giant Octopus.

But what else was different…?

I walked out of the room and started to wander around the airport looking at things and trying to notice anything different but couldn’t find anything. Everything in the food court looked normal and nothing was out of the ordinary. Maybe I was just losing my mind. I went back to the kids room and rewound the tape to that scene and watched it again…sure enough, there it was…Goonies being attacked by a Giant Octopus.

Eventually I got on my flight home. I was a little freaked out thinking… “Would there be something different back home?” I told my parents about the movie but they didn’t understand. They just thought I must have forgotten about the scene, or that maybe I fell asleep at the airport and had a dream.

As soon as I got home I ran into the family room, put in my home copy of The Goonies, hit fast forward and waited for the scene. When I got there… just like I remembered NO Giant Octopus…

The next day I went and told my friends. No one believed me. They all thought I was making it up. My only shred of proof was that Data mentions the giant Octopus at the end to all the parents. You have to understand, this was all before the internet was easily accessible, and I wasn’t that hip on the backstage antics of Hollywood.

For a good while I believed I must have been in some parallel world like in Sliders…it couldn’t have been a dream. As I got older I knew it there had to be some reasonable explanation for it. I never met anyone that knew what I was talking about and this bugged me for YEARS!

While in college, years later, thanks to the beautiful internet I learned the truth.

It was just a deleted scene!!

HERE IT IS!

Now how did the Denver airport have a copy with the Octopus scene intact? I really only have guesses…

BUT!

From what I understand this version was shown on the Disney channel a few times and they must have taped it off of there. That has to be it. RIGHT??

Last summer my wife I went to the infamous beach from the movie and took a few pictures. These are the very same rocks that lined up with the gold doubloon.

I really hope that this year when they release the 25^th anniversary Blu-ray that they include ALL the deleted scenes and an extensive modern commentary track. I want it all!!

To this day I can never go to the Denver airport without being reminded I once thought it was an alternate reality because of a Giant Octopus and the Goonies…

Dear Dracula optioned by Kickstart Entertainment

KICKSTART ENTERTAINMENT BITES ITS TEETH INTO DEAR DRACULA

Kickstart Entertainment, the company behind last summer’s smash comic-to-film hit WANTED and such upcoming projects as WANTED 2 and THE PREACHER, to be directed by Sam Mendes, has optioned DEAR DRACULA by Joshua Williamson and Vicente “Vinny” Navarrete.

DEAR DRACULA was published in October 2008 by Image/Shadowline Comics and tells the tale of a young boy who to decides to circumvent waiting on Santa Claus to bring him gifts by writing a letter to Dracula at Halloween. The boy is pleasantly surprised when the legendary vampire actually shows up and takes him on the adventure of a lifetime.

Kickstart Productions was established by Jason Netter in 1999 as a live action and animation production company. With a focus on comic book based material, Kickstart is producing several comic book based projects for film and television.

In television, Kickstart is currently in development on an animated series based on THE PRO at Spike. Kickstart also produced the 22 episodes series PAINKILLER JANE for Sci Fi Channel, and the animated AMAZING SCREW ON HEAD for Sci Fi. Kickstart is also currently in production on the second season of the animated TV series version of WOLVERINE & THE X MEN.

On the feature film side, Kickstart is currently in development on THE RED STAR, to be directed by Timur Bekmambetov at Universal, THE BOYS at Sony, MONSTER ATTACK NETWORK at Disney with Andy Fickman and THE COURIERS with Intrepid Pictures. So I've decided I want to become a rap star as well as a writer.

Anyway...

Been a bit busy lately working on scripts and pitches, but I still find time to watch TV and movies.
Here are somethings I've seen recently and I felt I could comment on with a few short comments:
MOVIES
Manhunter: Kind of weird seeing Brain Cox play Hannibal Lecter. Having seen Red Dragon before it took some of the heat away from this film for me, but it was still cool. Kind of like a CSI prequel.
Twilight: That's it? Really? What a weird movie. Should have been a CW show.
Punisher War Zone: So close yet so far away, but I still really enjoyed it.
21: Eh. It was okay. Not worth all the hype.
The Orphanage: Pretty good horror movie. Nice and moody. Kind of a sad ending.
Apocalypse Now Redux: I hadn't seen the redux before and it had been a long time since I had seen the original. Pretty crazy stuff.
TV
Castle: Nathan Fillion is the man. I'm hooked.
The Office: Kind of over it.
Leverage: What a great show. I was really impressed.
Lost: I watched about 14 hours of this and got all caught up last week. It wasn't fulfilling in the slightest.
Chuck: I was big time hooked on this show for a minute. Watched season one on DVD and then watched a ton of episodes on Hulu. It's good times and I hope they make it to a third season.
Lie to Me: It's okay, but I just don't trust Fox.
Scrubs: This last season has been really fun and the two-parter in the Bahamas was great.

I could go easily go on and on about TV, but I'll stop there. I watch way too much TV. Oh well.

Some of the concepts I have been working on have been really cool and I'm really happy with them. Lately, for my creator owned stuff, I want to do unique projects that are high quality and really stand out. Much easier said then done, but I feel I'm on the right track.

Another New York City Trip

I went to New York this last weekend for the New York Comic-Con.
Pretty much, this was one of the best experiences I've had at a con, for contacts and gigs. I can't go into why right now, but in a few months I'll be able to talk about it. It was good times.
It was my third trip to the big apple, but this time I had my buddies, Jason and Vinny along for the ride.

NECESSARY EVIL AT CARTOON NETWORK

Cartoon Network has announced that it optioned Necessary Evil, a monthly comic book series created by Joshua Williamson and Marcus L. Harris and published by Desperado Publishing. The comic book is being developed as a live-action weekly television series.

The television series' writers are Max Burnett, Chris Borelli and Jonathan Davis. Attached to produce the series are Chris Fenton and Chris Cowles of H2F Entertainment, and Brendan Deneen and Jarred Weisfeld of Objective Entertainment.

"Being a part of the Cartoon Network's new programming is an amazing opportunity," said Necessary Evil's co-creator Joshua Williamson. "The writers are doing a terrific job translating the book and the story to the small screen. I think people will be surprised how close the personalities of the characters in the comics are to their live action counterparts."

Deneen said, "As soon as I read the first issue of Necessary Evil, I knew Josh and Marcus had a multi-media hit on their hands. I'm proud to be involved with this piece of material, and I look forward to working on the TV series with this talented group of creators."

Peter Pan!

When I was a kid I used to love this video:

While watching it earlier I was reminded of an old Disney Halloween Special appropriately enough called "Disney Halloween." It was mostly a collection of old, with some new, Disney bits with a new voice over narrating the whole thing. Funny enough, I learned a lot about storytelling from this special. This was the first thing I saw that explained the importance of a good villain. That for there to be heroes, there needed to be villains. I got a lot of what eventually went into "Necessary Evil" from this special.

While I was thinking of all of this I was craving the nostalgia, so I popped in a very old vhs and watched it. At some point there was a segment about Peter Pan and Captain Hook. Peter Pan's voice sounded familiar so I looked him up. Turned out the actor was a boy named Bobby Driscoll, a theater actor who played Peter Pan on stage, was the visual basis for the Disney move along with being the voice. He was one of Disney's golden boys appearing in a lot of Disney projects. His life was very interesting.

But here is the thing and what made me want to do this post. According to Wikipedia, Bobby, the voice of Peter Pan, died home- and penniless in an abandoned Manhattan tenement in March of 1968 at the age of 31 due to the effects of his long-time drug abuse.

Peter Pan really grew up.
It's interesting to think about people with Peter Pan syndrome and how they never want to make those steps to become an adult. They'd rather stay children their whole lives, afraid of what being a grown up might mean. They never learn that balancing / juggling act that people have to do as adults, to still have fun, be yourself and take responsibility for your life and others lives.
I'm not saying I'm a grown up, I still have lots of growing up to do. But this makes me think I'm on the right track. That I know where I'm going and that I'm lucky to be as old as I am.

And on that note, I leave you with a part of that Disney Halloween Special.
It's a crappy copy off youtube, but it's still interesting to watch.

Next time I'll try to talk about things more fun, like Wall-E and puppies.

Rocky 2

As some of you know Rocky is my favorite movie of all time.
It's motivational, inspirational and has so many life lessons it's crazy.
Rocky 2 is also quite a gem.
I could quote all the movies for hours, but recently I was thinking about this little chain of dialogue from Rocky 2:

Reporter: Rocky, your pay for the fight will be very substantial. What will you do with the money.

Rocky Balboa: Well, the first thing I gotta do is I gotta pay the rent. And then I made this list on our way over here. I'd like to buy a couple hats, a motorcycle, a couple quarts of perfume for Adrian she likes to smell good. And some Muppet toys you know, Ernie, Big Bird. And the frog what's his name? Kermit?

Mickey: Yeah.

Rocky Balboa: And I thought maybe a statue for the church and a snow cone machine for you, Paulie. You like snow cones right?

Reporter: Rocky do you have something derogatory to say about the champ?

Rocky Balboa: Derogatory? Yeah, he's great.

My writing has been coming along great and I've been really happy with it, which of course means in a few months I'll look back on it and hate it with a passion. Been a few busy months, but it will all play off and I'll have some cool stuff to show soon.

Eventually, I plan on doing a con report. Not just of the San Diego con from this last month, but of the 5 cons (New York, LA, Portland, Seattle, San Diego) I went to this last year. It'll hopefully be something short and sweet. But as a teaser, of sorts, I'll post this. One of the coolest things about the San Diego Convention was seeing the Dear Dracula bookmarks Image/ Shadowline made for us.

We handed them out like crazy. We brought our own flyers /postcards, but still Image has been giving out bookmarks for years and seeing the Dear Dracula one among them was very rad.

Lately, I've been watching, in rotation on dvd, episodes of Avatar, Everybody Loves Raymond and Tales from the Crypt. It's been giving me weird nap dreams.

OH, yeah and another thing at the SD con. I bought a toy! I haven't bought a single toy in a year, so what was my prize?

4 BUCKS! That's right 4 dollars. I had the ones, so what the hell, right? I like the Corpse Bride movie, and this toy looked cool to me. Also, he reminded me of the Gentleman Zombie. Looking back I wish I had bought two, then I could customize my very own GZ toy.

I wish this cartoon series was on dvd...

I've read that 3 episodes will be on the new edition dvd of the movie coming out in September.

I updated my myspace for the first time in a very long, long time. Even made a rare friend request.
I started a new issue one script tonight for a new project. So far so good. I have a few goals to make this year, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they happen.

Been a long time.

It's been some time since my last posting. I need to get back in the swing of things, just been really busy. I moved to Portland back in April. I went to 5 conventions since January. I stayed in Long Beach and San Diego for 10 days for the comic-con. I got a nasty, but funny, sunburn on my face. I sold my comic collection on ebay... which felt a little bit like selling my soul. (Btw, it kind of makes me feel good knowing that "ebay" isn't in my spell check.)

I need to get back on the blog wagon slow, so for starters I'm going to post this:

Over the years I've grown to really love stop motion animation. When I was young, 18 or so, I wasn't a fan. Well, I was young and just didn't get it, I didn't see it. Now I do. I'd love to develop something for stop motion. This last year I've rediscovered Tim Burton in a way. I love his movies, his writings, his feel. I hope to one day do a book that has the same feel, the conflicts of black and white, and the gothic tone.

The best comic I read this week was Legion of Three Worlds by George Perez and Geoff Johns. I'm a big fan of Legion. The main three things at DC I want to write are Batman, Green Arrow and Legion. Of those three I have the most stories, notes for stories, and sadly to say fan fiction of the Legion.

IDW will begin publishing G.I.Joe in October. They published Aleister Arcane by Steve Niles a few years ago. I had a weird dream last night that Aleister Arcane was going to be the new bad guy in G.I.Joe. Weird. That's what having a chicken salad at 3am will do to you.

Wrestling has been very lame. Nothing new to see here, move along.

Right now I'm working on the edits to the script to Necessary Evil issue 10 and listening to the Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula soundtrack... opp... took too long to post, make that the Ocean's Eleven score.

I'll post more often... I promise.

Hello Everyone.
I haven’t been posting any actual posts in awhile. Just stuff focusing on Necessary Evil. My new comic book that will be in stores in October. This post is going to harken back to my older longer epic posts. Sit down with a bowl of cereal and prepare to kick back a bit.

For today's post I decided to do something completely different. Today's post is about my scripts. The art of writing. I don't normally like to share my thoughts on the process I go through in writing, but lately I have been getting asked questions about the subject. So for today's post that’s what I'm going to talk about. Now don't get too excited. I'm not going to give away all the secrets. I won't be talking about the secret magic writing potion I drink, or the creative cult I'm a member of that meets twice a month. Just some simple little things I think of as I write.

But before we get started I think it is important that I go over something crucial to this blog: I’m not someone to ask for advice about writing. I'm still new to the game. I have a lot of room to grow. I have years and years of practice to come before I feel I will be anywhere near the level I want to be as a writer. I’m a rookie. Minor leagues. I know writing isn’t easy. It’s really hard. Anyone tells you any different isn’t really a writer. Chances are they haven’t really written anything in their lives. Probably “note takers”.

Please don’t look at anything I say here as a rule. This is just my opinion, my own personal process. I wouldn’t want everyone to write like me. That would be boring. Also this is a “writing scripts” post, not an idea, or story post. Reading this won't help you with your ideas or overall story. Just, I would hope, in the process of writing scripts.

Also, for any of you jack-asses that are thinking “Those who can’t do… teach.”… fuck you. This isn’t a class, just a discussion of how I write. And then fuck you, for putting someone down for trying to help other people. Rot in hell.

That being said let's begin.

First up is what I like to call the
“Stuff or Something Rule”:
I have seen this in quite a few scripts. Mine included. Instead of writing what the character is doing they write “stuff or something.”
Example:

After “stuff” put in “or something”. Following me? Why not put:

We’ll minus “the fucking” but you get the idea. Why put “stuff”, when you can put what they’re doing? This is a simple one that will spice up your scripts and keep them from being stagnant. I find I do this one a lot myself. It’s gonna happen as you fly though scripts.

NEXT UP… KNOW YOUR ARTIST.
Talk to your artist. Some love to draw giant robots but hate to draw cars. Some can’t draw a sidewalk, but can draw a spaceship. Some can draw big guys with muscles but can’t draw the inside of a gym for their big muscled guys to work out in. Sometimes you have a good idea of your artist’s talents. Your might have an artist that will want a more detailed script, or a script with less clarification for them to play around with. Depending on your story you might need to go into a more intense description. With this section I am going to get a bit more personal and use examples of my past scripts showing examples of all of these.
On "Lost Rites" I wrote a much more loose script. Low on detail and high on freedom.

I think we all have seen someone run down a hallway. Whether it was in a comic or in a movie. We’ve seen it. In this scene we know from earlier panels and the tone of the book that she is running scared it doesn’t need to be repeated. Also, I know the artist pretty well, he really doesn’t need much else. He knows what to do.

Now in a book like Necessary Evil on the other hand… This is from Necessary Evil issue 5; get yourselves a little sneak peak.

PAGE TEN-ELEVEN
These next four pages star Ideal-Man and the White Knight.
TWO PAGE SPREAD
Statue of Liberty looking as majestic as ever from of a high bird’s eye view. The statue should be cropped a tad, but easily visible and distinguishable to the reader. We can see the raised torch, the head and the feet from this downward angle. Its day time, and the water beneath is clean and reflective.

In the front foreground, a dynamic shot of a flying Ideal-Man punching another man, also flying, dressed like an Egyptian Pharaoh with a high tech edge. The Pharaoh's head has just taken the hit; one of his teeth is popping out of his mouth. This needs to be right in the reader’s face, like it jumps out at them. They need to see this first before their eyes adjust to what is going on in the rest of the page.

In the background, jetting around in the sky beneath them are the Pharaohs henchman, 5 of them dressed in armor, wearing jet packs, shooting large ray guns. They are shooting at the Statue of Liberty. On the top of the Statue of Liberty’s head you can see the legendary hero, the White Knight, in a sword fight with two of the Pharaoh’s Henchman. Flying around the head of the statue is a white horse with wings, this horse belongs to the White Knight and is flying away from one of the jet packed henchman. Also to help set the scene, not in this page, but will be in the next few pages, there will be a huge floating Pyramid. Don’t forget to add a few small touches, like a news crew and civilians at the base of the statue. It’ll be really small, but needed to complete the environment.

IDEAL-MAN: We can’t let them get away with this!

Much more detail isn’t it? It is a two page spread while the Lost Rites was just a panel. But still, why so much? Because describing two super heroes protecting the statue of Liberty from Super Villains is a lot more involved than a girl running down a hall. You are going to have a hard time finding models to pose for the NE scene. I know that the artist of this book will want to kill me when he reads that two page spread, but will have a fun time doing it. Notice I put what angle I thought it should come from. He might change it, but not before we talk about it. The artist for this book doesn’t mind a bit of “camera” angle direction. Not all artists can hang with that. They want that to be their jobs.
Also it’s a different kind of book. Lost Rites is a much more human, down to earth book, whereas Necessary Evil is on a larger scale.

Another example is this from a recent short I wrote for a pitch.

Howard and Meghan very much in love, holding hands, are walking down the street together. It’s late at night. The only light source is from a street lamp above.

Again, I think we all have been on a walk with someone while we were holding hands. Not much more needed to be said. And honestly, much more might take the fun out of this scene for your artist. This shot is about emotion. Let your artist channel from their own memories here.

Three of Doctor Voltage's sidekicks, Roy, Sean, and Lacey, looking dirty and kind of beat up, are walking through some thick tropical woods on the island. Lacey is trying to call for help on her com-phone in the background. Roy is leading the way in the foreground with a big machete, slicing a path for them to walk through.

I think this panel is a happy medium; a little detail, a little direction and a little freedom for the artist.

The next and last personal tip is a weird one.
Dialogue: The Day-to-Day versus the surreal?

Remember the Necessary Evil Statue of liberty panel? This was the dialogue.
IDEAL-MAN: We can’t let them get away with this!
I hate that line, its lame. But… what else would a super hero say as a mad evil Pharaoh from another planet is trying to destroy the Statue of Liberty? Let’s try a few. Say these out loud with me:
IDEAL-MAN: We mustn’t allow them to do this!
Lame
IDEAL-MAN: We have to stop them! The fate of the world depends on it!
IDEAL-MAN: Hey dude, whys you gots to be messing with lady liberty yo?!
Lame and Lame.
IDEAL-MAN: Take that you evil fiend!
IDEAL-MAN: Go back where you belong… the history books!
IDEAL-MAN: You were done before you even started evil Pharaoh!
IDEAL-MAN: You won’t get away with this as long as Ideal-man is on the job.
Or just go with what feels nature:
IDEAL_MAN: We can’t let them complete their mission, White Knight!
Which in of itself feels stiff. I know no matter what I am going to change that line, but to what? I’m not happy with it, but it gets the point across and rolls off the tongue.
Also another challenge is this: Ideal-man is talking about protecting the statue of liberty from super villains, not saying “Hi” to a friend. It’s not:
IDEAL-MAN: What’s up dude, how was your weekend?
I wish I could write a whole book with simple, easy dialogue that we find in every day life like that. But no, I want a challenge. I want to write dialogue like this:
LACEY: The evil Professor Irregular is threatening to destroy the White House with a rocket from her hidden base on Lava Island if the U.S. doesn’t give her 100 billion by 6pm.
Or
ANTI: Ladies and Gentleman… please cover your children’s eyes, as this is a robbery! Remain calm and I promise you this will go off without a hitch!
Or
MILLER: I could tell this silly looking Bank guy to let us in or I’ll blow his head off…
Or
ANTI: Miller, Miller, Miller… That COULD work; however… I’d like something a little less Reservoir dogs and a lot more….
ANTI: Bond… James Bond.

See what I mean? Writing dialogue can be an interesting feat, you sometimes have to write a line that you have never found yourself or a friend speak aloud. It’s not always going to be as easy as a simple “Hello”.
My advice here? Have fun. Just have a blast with it. Place yourself in their shoes and read it out loud. Act it out. Get in character. And don’t think what YOU would say. Say what the character would say.
And you know what I think?
Ideal-man would say “We can’t let them get away with this!” He wouldn’t find it lame at all. That’s just something he would say as he is fighting off the bad guys.

Well that’s it for now. I hope someone finds this helpful or at least entertaining. I let you into a very private part of my life and I hope it was worth it. To some this might be all stuff they already knew. To some this will be new. But again, this is just what I think. You don’t have to listen to me, what do I know? You might have read this, and been saying “yeah I know all this, nothing new here” the entire time you read this, if so I hope you can bust out your last finished completed script and see if you really do. And if you do... well than stop stealing my shit! This is mine dammit. HaHa, Just kidding. But if you have no completed scripts, I hope you can learn some tips and tricks of your own from this post.

I love to write. It’s my passion and being able to share it with other people can be painful, but fun as well.

Short Attention span?

The other night my lovely girlfriend and I were joking around about how my blog is called Short Attention Span Theater and yet you’d have to have a god like attention span to read, understand and process my long ass epic blog entries. So for this blog I’m going to be doing something a bit different. Today I’m going to cover as much ground as usual, talking about a ton of interests, yet... only using one sentence each. ( I might cheat a bit but who cares?)
Sound like fun? Might take away some of the beauty of the blog, or it might…maybe… might just be a blessing in disguise.

Let’s get this show on the roll sucka!

MOVIES:
I got that Blockbuster Netflix deal, so to make it worth the money I’ve been flying through movies as fast as I can. Here is what I have watched recently.

The Break-up: Don’t watch this with anyone you are dating.
Taxi Driver: Always good, but I’d forgotten how quick the movie gets to the ending.
Stranger than Fiction: Surprisingly really good, one of the better movies I’ve seen this year.
The Departed: Great, not his best movie but Scorsese did a great job with this remake.
Raging Bull: You really have to be in the right mood to watch this movie.
Borat: I covered my face through half this movie, I can’t believe he got away with so much.
Slither: Awesome and really fun to watch if you don’t mind things that slither about.
Hard Candy: Dark, twisted and interesting.
Stay Alive: Bad Director, BAD, no more making or writing movies for you.
Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny: Funny, but just kinda there.
Children of Men: Absolutely amazing, the best movie out on this list.
Disturbia: Good enough to see again, but it’s just a movie, not much more to say.

TV shows (TV and DVD):
Supernatural: Love isn’t a strong enough word for this show, I highly recommend it.
Veronica Mars: Please, give me my fourth season CW, or suffer my… nothing…
The Office: One of the best and funniest shows EVER… especially since I know a few people who remind me of the characters.
Lost: Feels like it’s finally starting to go somewhere… thank you Brain K Vaughn.
Venture Bros.: Super cool, just bought the 2nd season on DVD.
Drive: Haven’t watched a full episode yet, might wait for DVD, but every minute I catch it looks great.
Superman and the Legion of Superheroes: Such a perfect adaptation of the comics its hard to believe its real.
Dexter: Can't take your eyes off this haunting and intellegent show.
Ninja Warrior: Addictively rad.

WRESTLING:
WWE RAW: Still disappointed, if Cena is champ for much longer I'm going hit someone.
TNA: If I ever won the lottery big, I know what one of the first things I would buy would be.
Smackdown: Fun to watch, getting better, but still the B show.
ECW: Still a huge mess, starting to show signs of life, but just barely.

(Longer than one sentence side-note: I recently sat down and watched something like 36 straight hours of wrestling with my good friend Mad Dog Dan Morrow. Ranging from WCW in 91, every Raw in fast-foward from Summerslam 97 to Royal Rumble 98, some parts of 2001 and just a bunch of random wrestling from all across the spectrum and it really proved my worst suspicions that the current state of wrestling is at an all-time creative and business low. It’s just a sad mess of “makes-no-sense” tactics. You may now return to your regularly scheduled blog.)

EU: Such a huge endeavor, its going to take some time and lots of energy.
New stuff: Surprises are a foot or so I hope.

This blog was much easier and faster to write than any other for obvious reasons. Not sure if I will do another like this, it wasn't as much fun. However placing limitation on one self can be a learning experiance. What do you think?

I wish I had the time to do this more often, but I don’t, I just have so many things going on that it feels like every minute of every day is taken... My only escape has been watching a lot of movies. My time is not my own but being busy is a good thing. I’d rather be busy then not really remember what I did with my time.
